Why does Thurston County have to protect prairies and oak woodlands?
The 1990 Washington State Growth Management Act requires Thurston County to protect sensitive habitat areas (including prairies and oak woodlands) that support threatened or endangered plant and animal species and other rare habitats. Beyond our legal obligation to the state, Thurston County has a profound duty to protect the fragile ecosystems needed for a healthy local environment.
