Why does this Canadian nickel from 1958 have squared edges?
All Canadian nickles up to 197-something (can’t remember) have the squared edges. It was so blind people could feel the difference between a nickle and a quarter and sighted people could quickly tell their nickles and quarters apart in their change pockets. Now the nickle has a smooth edge and the quarter has those little striae, similar to dimes, also to allow the blind to feel the difference.
