Why does “The Valley” sometimes have negative connotations?

There’s always been a bit of animosity between stuck-up people (like the ones in the shows you mentioned) and the people of the San Fernando Valley, which is part of LA. It’s really just an “us vs. them” thing. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, the valley was the cool place to be. Remember “Valley Girl” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”? That’s the valley. Now “they” say it’s the other way around. There are a lot of lower-income areas of the valley, but there are a lot of those on the LA side as well. Some stuck up people on the west side look down on the valley. The people in those shows are fictitious, anyway, and are really caricatures of real people. Don’t believe everything you see on TV.
