Why does the tuition and fees increase every year?
The University is not fully responsible for these increases. As a state University, we are dependant on the State of Minnesota’s allocations. The legislators decide on the budget for education in the state every year. The financial situation in the country and in the world, for that matter, is not good. The state and its Governor recently made deep cuts in our budget allocation. The result could be that a school may not be able to continue unless the money comes from somewhere. Almost all Universities across the country have had to adjust their expenses and incomes to balance the budget. This is why we have to raise the tuition. We also have to tighten “our belt” quite a bit. The most important is that the education does not suffer. The University President and our Dean have both made this very clear. For example all University staff and faculty had to take a one-time salary cut helping with the financial situation. The most important is that the education does not suffer.
