Why does the Stylus 1000 limit the size (resolution) of images shot in certain Bright Capture-enabled shooting and scene modes?
This is a noise-reduction strategy. The noise that can sometimes be seen on images captured in low light is often related to the high number of pixels on the image sensor. Pixels generate heat as they collect light information, and this heat can cause unwanted electronic charges, or noise, to creep into the digital image file. The more pixels there are on the image sensor, the more heat and the more potential for noise. Bright Capture condenses the light information from neighboring pixels on the CCD into a smaller series of pixels in the captured image. This means that the total number of pixels, or resolution, needed to capture the image is reduced. The resulting image with Bright Capture will be bright, clear, and less susceptible to the effects of noise. The Stylus 1000 restricts resolution when shooting in the Available Light, Candle, and Shoot & Select1 scene modes, in the high-speed Sequential Shooting mode, and when the ISO sensitivity value is manually set to 3200 and 6400.
