Why does the same group of teens work together for the entire yearlong program?
A fundamental aspect of the Pangaea philosophy is that learning to function effectively within a group setting can be a powerful tool for creating positive change in the world. Learning problem-solving techniques, teamwork and how to be a contributing member of a group are invaluable skills for participants to carry into all aspects of their lives. Because cultivating respect for difference is of such significance to the goal of our program, the group itself will learn to address issues of conflict in peaceful and creative ways. The experience of working with the same group of people for an entire year will offer a venue for participants to let go of generalizations and stereotypes about others, thus breaking down social barriers that may currently exist between different ethnic groups of Portland.
