Why does the Rio Grande Valley need a clinic?
Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in the Rio Grande Valley. More than 40,000 dogs and cats enter the local animal center every year and more than 27,000 will never leave alive. There are only two ways to control pet overpopulation: euthanasia or sterilization. Sterilization (spay or neuter surgery) is the only humane solution. Presently there is no clinic in the Rio Grande Valley that offers spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats at a reduced cost. There are many responsible pet owners who realize the necessity, but need an affordable alternative. How bad is the problem? An intact female cat can reproduce three times a year, having an average of 5 kittens per litter. This same cat and her kittens can produce more than 11 million kittens in just 9 years. An intact female dog can reproduce twice a year, having an average of 6 puppies per litter. This same dog and her puppies can produce more than 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
