Why does the province need to take action on drug prices?
The Government of Nova Scotia is committed to making health care better and life more affordable for Nova Scotians. As part of this, we want to ensure Nova Scotian seniors and those who get help with their prescription drug costs through Pharmacare have access to the drugs they need at a better price. Spending by government on prescription drugs, through the province’s Pharmacare programs, has been growing at a rapid rate. In fact, it has almost doubled in the past eight years. Without taking steps to slow this growth, spending on drug costs is expected to increase by close to seven per cent this year alone. As a government, we are taking action to slow the growth of these costs so that we can hold the line on drug costs, and get a better price for drugs for Nova Scotians who rely on Pharmacare programs for coverage. The province needs to take action so that we can continue to afford the Pharmacare programs into the future, and ensure Nova Scotians have access to the drugs they need to
