Why does the People sidebar always say I have new Direct Messages on Twitter?

Flock is accurately reflecting this by showing the total number of Direct Messages you have in the People sidebar. You can either delete direct messages to lower this number or contact Twitter and request that they add read/unread status for Direct Messages.
