Why does the output reading of my new inverter read low at 103 VAC?
Modified sine wave inverters produce a signal that tricks normal voltmeters into reading low due to the wave-shape. Most voltmeters are only calibrated to read correctly when reading true sine wave, even if they are so-called “RMS voltmeters”. There are some more expensive meters such as the Fluke 87 & Fluke 189 which are “True RMS reading voltmeters” and will provide the correct voltage of 115 V nominal regardless of the output waveform of the inverter.
