Why does the original French title, “LHote”make an even better title than its English translation?
ladyvols1 Teacher High School – 9th Grade The French title, “L’Hote,” is more appropriate because it can be translated to mean either the host, or the guest. This story is as much about the host as it is about the guest. The Arab prisoner is the guest and Daru, the schoolmaster . The desire of Daru to remain neutral is as important, if not more important to the story as the situation of the prisoner.
