The O.N.C.C. uses the crescent moon primarily because of Genesis 1:14: And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. The astronomical new moon can appear anywhere within a day, only the crescent moon remains consistent with creation, it only can appear in the evening sky.
