Why does the Mouse-Trak mouse (B5XXMP, BMPIND) not work in conjunction with my HP HIL keyboard?

Hewlett-Packard’s interface requires that if using a PS/2 style mouse that a PS/2 style keyboard must also be used. The older HP systems accomplished this via an external interface box. The newer J200 series has both the HIL and PS/2 ports built onto the motherboard but still require the use of either all PS/2 or all HIL peripheral devices.
