Why does the moon appear more orange than usual tonight?

0

In the States we call a very orange Moon a harvest moon because it is seen most often in late summer and early fall. In any event, the orange color is a function of 2 things: as you stated, it is just above the horizon which means that the reflected light is traveling through much more of the atmosphere then if it were coming from directly overhead. Any dust particles in the atmosphere will “color” these rays. I don’t know why there may be more dust than usual (if there is indeed more) in the atmosphere in your area, but it is dust and other airborne particles that create the various colors. The same thing happens when the Sun sets.
