Why does the meerkat have large hips?
The hips or pelvic area of the meerkat is enlarged, and is broader then the meerkats shoulders. The reason for this is due to the fact that the meerkat often stands upright on its back legs, and the pelvis has become strengthened for this extra support. The shoulders are narrow so that the meerkat can easily reach prey with the front legs squeezing into deeper holes in the ground, to “fish’ out the food item.
