Why does the Mayan calendar end in December of 2012?
There are solar calendars and Lunar calendars that track the year according to the sun or moon. The Mayans created a calendar that tracked the Milky Way. It is very accurate at forecasting celestial events, like returning comets, eclipses, etc. The Mayans even knew the exact diameter of the Earth. On December 21st, 2012 the Earth and Sun will align with the center of the Milky Way and end this calendar. Unfortunately, no Mayans are left to create a new calendar. If you made a calendar that was good for about 12,000 years, you probably wouldn’t hurry to do calendar 2.
