Why does the International Federation put gender inequality so high on its HIV agenda?
Gender inequality has a direct bearing on personal and social vulnerability to the virus. Women have a greater biological risk of exposure to the virus but they are often relatively powerless within communities. Women often have fewer rights and resources to call upon. They are frequently forced into early sexual activity and are unable to insist on protecting themselves. They may also suffer from sexual violence and exploitation, including being forced to barter sexual favours for their own survival or that of their families. ‘Leadership’ is the theme selected by UNAIDS for World AIDS Day 2007. How does our own message connect with it? The International Federation Global Agenda has made of the fight against HIV one of its priorities. By initiating the Global Alliance process, we also identify ourselves as a leading force in the fight against HIV at the community level. Every day around the world, Red Cross/Red Crescent volunteers advocate for communities and people living with HIV to
