Why does the guidance not recommend rumble strips on multi-lane highways other than rural freeways?
Rural conditions are where rumble strips can be most effective and there are few obstacles to their installation. It is not our intent to limit the use of rumble strips in non-rural applications, however, there is not enough information currently available to address those at a policy level. The policy should be applied to all rural multi-lane highways, not just freeways.
