Why does the emissions calculator on www.myclimate.org come up with higher emissions than the calculators on swiss.myclimate.org and lufthansa.myclimate.org?
The reason for the differences in emissions calculated at Lufthansa/Swiss and at myclimate is that for one, at Lufthansa/Swiss only CO2 emissions are calculated. At myclimate, however, other emissions are taken into account as well, using a multiplier (see above). This means that at Lufthansa/Swiss, we are dealing with CO2 offsetting. The customer can pay to achieve carbon neutrality. In contrast, at myclimate, we are striving for climate neutrality, since the entire estimated climate impact is offset. On the other hand, the calculations are based on different data. Actual fuel usage statistics of the Lufthansa Group plane fleet were used for the Lufthansa/Swiss emissions calculator. The myclimate emissions calculator however is based on data from two reference aircraft types (see above).
