Why does the elephant symbolize the Republicans and the donkey the Democrats?

GOP: The mascot symbol, historically, is the elephant. A political cartoon by Thomas Nast, published in Harper’s Weekly on November 7, 1874, is considered the first important use of the symbol.[51] In the early 20th century, the usual symbol of the Republican Party in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Ohio was the eagle, as opposed to the Democratic rooster. This symbol still appears on Indiana ballots. American Democratic Party: The most common symbol for the party is the donkey, although the party itself never officially adopted this symbol.[44] The origins of this symbol are unknown, but several theories have been proposed. According to one theory, in its original form, the jackass was born in the intense mudslinging that occurred during the presidential race of 1828 in which Andrew Jackson was sometimes called a jackass by his opponents.

The Elephant is noted for it’s intelligence and it’s courage. The Donkey isn’t.
