(posted October 2, 2009) The District purchases buses with air brakes because they have been the industry standard for years, have been proven safer than hydraulic brakes, and are cheaper to run for 100,000 miles because they have fewer parts and problems. In addition, because the District sells its buses back to the manufacturer at the end of the year, bus manufacturers have informed the District that they have an easier time reselling our 1-year-old buses if they have air brakes, AM-FM radios and white roofs. In fact, the amount for which the District sells the buses back has increased over the last few years, from 81.06 percent of the purchase price in 2005-06 to 89.5 percent in 2008-09. This amount will increase again this year with each bus being sold at 90.65 percent of the original cost. A study of transportation costs will be presented to the Board of Education in January.
