Why does the DCM require such a fast computer?
The DCM utilizes the computer systems processing power in conjunction with its own processor to capture MPEG video. Thus, the faster the computer, the better the DCM can perform. Since VITECs hybrid compression architecture automatically uses as much of the available processing power of the PC as it can, the performance of the algorithm depends on the PC itself. Therefore the image quality is also a function of the PC power. In a traditional full hardware MPEG encoder, the quality doesnt depend on the PC power. The figure below illustrates this behavior : For each application (VCD 2.0 encoding, DVD-Video, SIF, HD1, FD1) there is a minimal and a recommended amount of processing power that should exist in your PC.
