Why does the color of allergenic extracts vary from lot-to-lot?
Color variation in allergenic extracts arises primarily from variation in source materials. Since the source materials are biological, they can vary from year-to-year or from one location to another. Manufacturers are required to confirm the identity of each source material by microscopic examination and by protein patterns. Color differences are considered normal variation and color does not affect the potency of an extract. Some extracts, including short ragweed, will darken over time.Processing procedures may also affect the color of extracts. ALK-Abelló mold extracts are dialyzed, and that process also tends to remove pigments, so some mold extracts may appear almost colorless.
