Why does the City of Bonham bill for water use in cubic feet rather than gallons?
It has to do with the water meters currently installed on your property. The original water meters installed in Bonham (years ago) registered water use in cubic feet. So to maintain consistency in reading and billing over the years, we have replaced old/broken meters with the same type meter, and we still do. No one currently working for the City was around when this all started, and the only explanation I have found was that it may have been done for consistency with the gas bill, which is billed in cubic feet, also. This is obviously a good trivia question; so if anyone out there knows the original reason, please let me know. To assist in reading your bill, the conversion from cubic feet to gallons is 7.48 gallons per cubic feet. Whether we bill in cubic feet or gallons, your bill would still be the same. Your base bill covers about 1500 gallons. Additional water use over the base amount increases your bill. We have plans to replace all water meters in the City starting in 2007. The
