Why does the cerebral cortex look kind of loopy?
Yes. The cortex in itself, is the most important part (hyerarchically speaking) of the central nervous system- In order to save space, the brain has several folds (the elevated parts are called gyri and the gaps between this smooth, rounded elevations are called sulci (singular name would be sulcus), that are sort of “valleys” between the elevations…(in the bottom of those, run the small arteries that nourish the cortex…. In the average adult, the total surface of the cortex is about 1.2- to 1.3 square meters…..more that enough to handle all the information, sensations, motor commands etc, for a normal functioning brain….
