Why does the capstan motor operate all the time in Yamaha cassette decks ?
Yamaha cassette decks use a full logic type of transport mechanism. A full logic transport is computer controlled for smooth tape handling, and also provides excellent recording and playback characteristics. The capstan motor is sometimes used as an assistive device to raise and lower the heads for the record and play modes, as well as operating the necessary mechanisms to the put the machine in the FF/Rew. mode. Since the tape deck can’t “guess” when the mechanism will be activated, the capstan motor always turns, waiting for a command from the micro-processor to perform the desired transport function. We do recommend however, that if you do not plan on using the cassette deck for a prolonged period of time, that you turn off the power to the cassette deck via the “ON/OFF” switch located on the front panel.
