Why does the bear have an ear tag?
Most State wildlife agencies with bear programs will ear tag any bear they handle for research and/or identification purposes. The ear tags are usually metal and have unique numbers to allow an individual bear to be identified if it is handled again. Maryland DNR staff routinely ear tag bears every year in our western counties. Pennsylvania Game Commission staff ear tag as many as 600 bears per year as part of their bear research program.
