Why does the average American people oppose Social Welfare so strongly?
Most average Americans don’t oppose social welfare programs. The extreme right does–but only if the benefits don’t go primarily to them (e.g. the “faith-based initiaves”). As for the notion that people “want” to live off government handouts–taht is a deliberate stereotyp. They actually know almost nothing abotu the welfare system. If they did, they’d know the following facts: >most recipients are white (and if you think racism is n’t part of the right-wing opposition to wwelfare, you haven’t been listening to the “hidden” meanings of what they say) >most are on welfare because their (white) husbands have abandoned them–they are NOT women who had children out of wedlock >most of those who stay on welfare for any length of time do so because they lack education–and you will note that the very same people who oppose welfare also oppose funding edcuational and job training programs that would make it possible for welfare recipients to learn to take care of their own. Their opposition i
