Why does the ARC keep track of breeding colonies?
DLAM must issue annual reports concerning the use of all animals at UCLA, including those animals used only for the purposes of breeding. A breeding colony protocol is necessary to track any animals produced in breeding colonies but not yet utilized in approved research protocols. In addition, the breeding colony application allows DLAM to control for the spread of disease through “clean” colonies by ensuring that tests are conducted to control for problems such as the proliferation of Murine viruses, the loss of inbred status, or the creation of substrains.
