Why Does Stress Cause Weight Gain?
There’s a pesky culprit that is as responsible for our weight gain as excess caloric intake, and that is the stress hormone cortisol. The high-stress lives we lead are causing us to pack on weight at an alarming rate, and if we don’t take some drastic measures then things will just get worse. There are many causes of stress, and the major ones that probably come to mind are your career, your kids, your finances, and your relationship. These in fact are all very important triggers for cortisol release, and if you have a type A personality, that is a personality where things must be done your way all the time, that adds that much more stress to the equation. So what exactly is cortisol? It’s a hormone that is release from the adrenal glands, and when it is secreted by the adrenal gland in normal physiological functioning, it serves many important purposes and helps our bodies maintain a well-balanced, homeostatic internal environment.
