Why does smoke comes out from oil sealed rotary high vacuum pump?

I would guess that some of the oil sealing the gaskets of the pump is being sucked into the rotary pump and vaporizing due to the low pressure.

The oil sealed vacuum pump means that the pump chamber is partially filled with oil. The pump has vanes which rotate inside the housing. The oil actually fills the void between the tips of the vanes and the housing. Which means the oil is forced by centrifugal force to the outer most edges of the vanes and is pumped out of the discharge into a separator (usually a cyclone type some have filters). Its normal for some of the oil to come out of the discharge, I’d check the separator section to see if it has a filter that is damaged.
