Why does Singapore need to desalinate water?

0

Desalination is a process that removes excess salt and minerals from water to make it usable for animals, irrigation, and human consumption. Singapore needs to desalinate water because it does not have its own supply of fresh water. They are currently tapping into Malaysia for that resource in order to meet their nation’s demand of fresh water. However, due to issues that arose regarding the renegotiation of the price of water, Singapore may now be facing the possibility of going dry when that contract expires. As thus, they have even come out with their own bottled water, New Water or Nu Water ( I can’t remember the spelling, but you get the phonetics), which is actually purified water sourced from their own used water (read: toilets, showers, etc). With that image in mind, its no wonder they’d rather opt for desalination.
