Why does shaving with a double-edge razor blade produce a closer shave than cartridge type blades?
A couple of reasons. First, modern technology can produce a very sharp edge on a double-edge razor blade that wasn’t possible many years ago when your grandfather was shaving with a double-edge razor. Second, more of the blades edge is exposed to the skin on a double-edge razor than on a cartridge razor, due to blade gap, so the edge gets closer to the skin. Third, the DE blade in a double-edge razor doesn’t pivot like on a cartridge razor, so you have more control over the blade angle by adjusting the angle with your wrist (optimal is 28 to 32 degrees) and a steeper blade angle will produce a closer shave. Fourth, the action of shaving with a single edge in a safety razor is similar to shaving with a straight razor which gives the closest shave possible. Finally, cartridge type razor blades are designed more to produce comfortable shaves than close shaves. Cartridge razor blades are also designed for men wanting to shave fast whereas shaving with a double-edge blade takes a little mor
