The simple reason is that if we didn’t deliver on Christmas Eve then the presents wouldn’t be waiting for everyone on Christmas morning! Going back in time further, the Magi brought presents for the Christ child and people continued the tradition of giving gifts on Christmas Eve so that they would be there Christmas morning.
