Why does salty liquorice with ammonia taste like salt?

Maybe the English term ‘salty liquorice’ is misleading to start with. In Scandiavia it’s called ‘salmiakk’, which is also the word for ammonia used for cleaning. I suspect it always has ammonium chloride and not salt.
