In public policy polling, it can be difficult to nail down specific positions of those polled. Many polling companies, such as Pew, Gallup and Zogby, need to increase their margin of error when they estimate that the answers they have received may not be indicative of the entire country. For example, if they poll only people in Alabama about their stance on gun control, they would have to use a very large margin of error because many other states have very different views on gun control than Alabama does.
