Why does organic cotton clothing matter?
Just because you don’t eat your clothing doesn’t mean going organic isn’t important. The cotton plant requires some of the most intense pesticide and fertilizer regimes of any plant. Although only about three percent of the world’s arable land is used for cotton, it uses about a quarter of the world’s pesticides and fertilizers. That’s about one-third of a pound per cotton shirt. Every time you buy an organic cotton shirt, you are not only saving those chemicals from leaching into our groundwater, but are supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Now that’s a cool birthday gift idea!
