Why does OFB sponsor a National Coming Out Day initiative?
Most members of Open For Business have had have very positive experiences being out at UMBS. Some students have, however, over-heard inappropriate comments and language. We believe the vast majority of UMBS students want to foster an open-minded and inclusive environment and are simply not always aware of the gay students at UMBS. The NCOD initiative is designed to raise awareness of gay students at UMBS.Because of the low visibility of gay students at UMBS, some people don’t feel comfortable letting their colleagues know that they are gay — unsure of the reaction they may receive. NCOD is an opportunity to let these students know that they are welcome at UMBS.It is also an opportunity to help prospective gay students know they are welcome at Michigan. Though the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor have historically been viewed as very gay friendly, some prospective students falsely perceive that the business school is not as welcoming as some of our peer schools.
