Why Does Nursing Home Neglect and Abuse Happen ?
Occupational stress is considered the major factor contributing to neglect and abuse in nursing homes. Employees of nursing homes are usually underpaid compared to their medical counterparts and generally have more responsibilities. Personal and financial stresses may also contribute to the behavior of the abuser. With the rampant under-staffing and unqualified staffing, poor training and lack of oversight are natural outgrowths within the nursing home industry. However, there is no excuse for abuse and neglect. When a loved one is entrusted to a nursing home, they should be capably cared for by the establishment. Anything less than exceptional care should not be tolerated from nursing home administration. Nothing can erase the pain of losing a loved one or seeing them hurt. When it happens, it should not go unpunished.
