Why does NHA use scoring scales?
NHA uses scoring scales because there is compelling evidence that scoring scales support improved student learning. This is our primary goal and we are constantly looking for ways to better serve students. The key benefits of scoring scales (sometimes referred to as ‘scoring rubrics’) are increased reliability and consistency of scoring, and the potential to promote learning and improving instruction. Scoring scales help to make expectations and criteria clear while also facilitating feedback and self-assessment. There is strong evidence supporting these benefits. For example, in a comprehensive review of 75 empirical studies on the benefits of scoring rubrics, Anders Jonsson and Gunilla Svingby concluded, “…reliable scoring of performance assessments can be enhanced by the use of rubrics… rubrics seem to have the potential of promoting learning and/or improving instruction.” For more information about the use of scoring scales in the classroom, see Classroom & Assessment Grading that
