Why does my young daughter hate maths?
Hi Layla, My view is that she doesn’t grasp the concept and that is where TV programs like Sesame Street play a very important role in early education I have noticed in bookshops here in Australia that there are many books available for a range of children’s ages that simplify maths and it might pay to look at these if they are available near where you live. First, it would be prudent to take a look at some of the maths lessons that your daughter is having difficulty with; then you work-out the problem for yourself and then decide how you might make it easier to explain to your daughter. Sometimes it might be necessary to get back to basics and instead of using maths numbers, use lolly sticks (these sticks can be bought in most supermarkets) or used match-sticks. Example: If you say 2 + 2 = 4, it might be easier to use four oranges to explain that. Oranges are tangible, numbers can be abstract = mean nothing to a child.
