Why does my stainless steel cutlery go rusty in the dishwasher?
This has happened to my cutlery as well and it is stainless steel and not cheap quality (I paid £860 for the set!) with a 50 year guarantee. What it is leaving cutlery sitting in the dishwasher both before washing and after provides perfect environment for rust to develop just the correct level of humidity. Things that effect it more is certain food debris – salts in particular and washing other metals at the same time in the dishwasher. The trick is to put the cutlery basket in your sink or on the drainer and add the cutlery to this preferably after a quick rinse. As it will be in open air rust is less likely to form. Just put the cutlery basket in the dishwasher just before putting it on and when you have no other metal items in the dishwasher. As soon as the dishwasher finishes lift the basket out and either leave it on your draining board to air dry or preferably polish them off with a tea towel whilst still hot.
