Why does my Sony VPL ESD Projector have a flashing Amber light?

The manual should specify what a flashing light means. That said, if the projector doesn’t turn on it probably means that either the lamp (or ballast) is shot, or a protection circuit is engaged. The latter could be due to a plugged filter or faulty fan or other problem with the cooling. In general, bulbs are expensive (often $400+), so if your projector is more than 5-6 yrs old, unless it was a particularly good one (and 720p or better), you probably would be advised to retire it and buy a new one. It’s probably not worth repairing … although check the manual under the troublehooting section … it could be something simple. Prices have dropped radically in the last 2-3 years and performance had risen steeply. For example you can buy a 1080p resolution projector for as little as $1000 (Optoma HD20 (See review at link. Compare at $10,000+ just 3 years ago), and a reasonable 720p projector can often be found for $700.
