Why does my computer run Scandisk when it starts up (Windows version prior to XP)?
This is usually caused by one of two things. If you don’t shut down your computer properly, Scandisk will automatically run to correct any errors caused from the improper shutdown. The second reason may be that your hard drive is sick. If Scandisk runs often, you should run Scandisk and make sure it is checked to automatically fix errors and also to do a thorough scan. A thorough scan will also check the surface of the disks for bad areas so it takes a while to run. After doing this if you are still having problems with Scandisk running, make sure you keep you data backed up on a very regular basis because your hard drive is probably ready to die. This is the time to call a consultant to check it out.
