Why does my cingular cell phone cause my computer speakers to make funky noises?

Your phone, depending on the model, operates off of either three or four frequencies (850Mhz, 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, 1900Mhz) When the phone is on, it is constantly communicating with the network. This communication is strongest when you are sending or recieving a voice or data signal (calls or text messages). When the phone is in close proximity to a speaker (any speaker, not just computer speakers) while it is sending these strong signals, the speakers actually pick up some of the signal as interference and you get the distinct “Cingular noise” that I’m sure you are very familiar with. All cell phones will do this however, but GSM phones are more pronounced than CDMA phones like Verizon (Verizon sounds more like a hiss, compared to Cingular’s buzz). It’s ok though. Annoying as it may sound, It shouldn’t damage your speakers, only your nerves.
