Why does my cat urinate in the laundry basket when her litter box is nearby?
There could be several reasons for this. First of all, are there clothes in the basket? If yes, are the clothes in the basket dirty or clean? If dirty, it could mean that a) she’s ticked at someone in the house and sending a message – a possibility if the clothes are all one person’s. b) the smell on the clothes is really stinky and smells to her like urine, so she assumes its a litter area. If they are clean, are you using ammonia products on the clothes? She could be smelling that and assuming that’s urine. If the basket is empty, perhaps there is a lingering smell on the basket from the factory or from a prior usage. It would also be a good idea to check the litter box and see if there are any issues with it. For instance, is it clean? Cats reach a point where they will not use a dirty litter box after a certain point because they can’t properly cover up what they’ve done. If it’s clean, do you have enough litter in it?
