Why does my car crunch when i put it in reverse?

The crunching sound means that the 1st motion shaft is still spinning and the drive is being transferred through the ley shaft and so to the reverse gear. The reverse gear being a crash gear rather than constant mesh. There are two things that can cause this either you are selecting reverse to quickly after depressing the clutch so the gearbox has not had time to stop spinning or your clutch is not clearing properly. The clutch not clearing could be caused by a damaged pressure plate or the plate is sticking on the splines of the 1st motion shaft and still rubs against the flywheel or pressure plate just enough to keep the 1st motion shaft turning .If your clutch is hydraulic you could have air in the line which would affect the amount of travel likewise a cable could be stretched. All of these problems will affect reverse gear first because its a crash gear and does not have a synchro hub which in itself is a small clutch.
