Why does mutation happens?
There are two types of mutation; Spontaneous and Induced. The former means that for genetic or some unknown reason, mutations would happen. If the turfgrass cultivar or variety is derived from mutation, it might still go on mutating. The latter refers to mutation that occurs when some external factors happen. For example; radiation, some types of chemicals, extreme environment, bites of radioactive spiders, meteorite storms, heck, let your imagination run wild; pee of a drunken dancing dog that had just escaped from the circus or curse of a pious golfer. If it will happen, it will happen. Genes are still being studied now. Cancer is a form of mutation, a somatic mutation if you will. And it is still being studied. It is surmised that mutated turfgrass will revert back to its original species after a few generations of being replanted. From my own personal observation, some Tifdwarf cultivars that has been performing well on greens, seems to be mutating after a few years. This may fall
