You might not have Automatic Updates enabled; other options include downloading the updates and installing them on shutdown if you choose to and just alerting you that updates exists without downloading them. To allow your PC to update itself automatically open your control panel (Start->Control Panel) then double click the Automatic Updates Icon, click the Automatic Updates(recommended) radio button and then the OK button.
