Why does mercenaries 2 freeze randomly?

When I am connected to Xbox live and load up Mercenaries 2, it just randomly freezes when the writing saying “connecting to EA nation” at the top gets half way across the screen then my whole Xbox freezes and I can’t do anything and have to turn it off. This does not happen when I am not connected to Xbox live. By the way, the disc is very clean although it was pre-owned.
